In the late 1990s, Dr. Carles Puente, from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), conducted a search to determine how to create internal multiband antennas that were much smaller and more efficient. His innovation was based on fractal geometry, and in 1995 he filed the first patent application for fractal mobile phone antennas.

In 1999, he founded Fractus as a spin-off from the university to bring that technology to market.

The key to the invention was allowing cell phone antennas to transition from being external (those spiky “protrusions”) to being integrated within the device without sacrificing performance. They succeeded: Fractus’s fractal antennas could operate on multiple frequency bands while taking up very little space. This breakthrough eliminated external flip-out antennas from cell phones and paved the way for the compact, sleekly designed phones we take for granted today.
